Ask for a written plan that explains the possible complications and the aftercare. Be careful if you meet a hard sell, little information or pressure to decide quickly.
Not always.
Standard travel insurance is usually built for emergencies, and many policies exclude planned or elective treatment, so you may need specialist cover. Read the policy wording, declare all medical conditions and medication, and expect that you may have to pay upfront for care abroad. In the UK, the GHIC and EHIC cards are not travel insurance and do not cover planned treatment.
It depends on your country.
For example, the UK NHS says you cannot get reimbursement for dental treatment abroad. Ask your own health service or insurer before you travel, and do not assume a refund.
Tell your dentist about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, any chronic conditions, recent illnesses and allergies, and update them if anything changes.
Your dentist may also want to speak to your own doctor when planning treatment.
It depends on your nationality.
Turkish missions say the only official e-visa site is evisa.gov.tr, where you choose your nationality to see if you can apply online and what extra conditions apply. Other websites that sell e-visas are not official. Rules change, so confirm them on the official site or with the Turkish consulate before you book travel.
It depends on the procedure, so follow your surgeon's advice.
A 2023 review suggests at least 24-48 hours after a simple extraction, about 72 hours after a surgical extraction and at least two weeks after a sinus lift (six weeks is the more cautious plan, especially for long-haul flights). Its general planning figure is about one week after most dental procedures. Do not fly with sinus symptoms.
Follow your dentist's written instructions first.
NHS trust leaflets agree on the main points: wait until the numbness has gone before eating hot food, eat soft food at first, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, and avoid smoking for at least 24-48 hours because it raises the risk of infection and dry socket. Some leaflets advise longer for smoking.
Dental X-ray doses are very low, and the IAEA estimates that fetal doses from dental imaging are usually below the natural background dose received in a day.
A lead apron or thyroid shield lowers the dose further. Always tell the dentist if you are or might be pregnant so they can decide which images are really needed.
Pain that does not settle, swelling, fluid or pus from the site, bleeding that continues, or a fever are reasons to contact your dentist promptly.
The most common implant infection is peri-implantitis, which can lead to bone loss if it is not treated. Smoking and conditions such as diabetes raise the risk.
Brush twice a day with a soft brush, clean between the teeth daily with interdental brushes, implant floss or a water flosser, and avoid hard-bristled or metal tools that can scratch the implant.
Keep regular check-ups and hygienist visits. Implants can last for many years with good care and no guarantee applies to everyone.
It is not guaranteed.
UK public health bodies note they have no obligation to provide before-and-after care for private treatment abroad other than emergency care, and a dental association survey found many dentists have treated problems after treatment abroad. Agree a follow-up plan and get your treatment records in writing before you leave, and tell your home dentist about the work.
Ask about payment methods and refund terms in writing before you pay.
In the UK, paying part or all of a purchase between GBP 100 and GBP 30,000 on a credit card can bring Section 75 protection, even for overseas purchases, but debit cards are not covered by it (a chargeback may be possible) and payments through a third party may not qualify. Rules differ by country and card, so check with your card provider.
